Supporting Queer Comics & Creators
In the preceding days of Comic Book Herald, I’d occasionally get promotional Kickstarter emails playfulness a “queer sci-fi saga” (or some such), and I’ll fully admit, I did not perceive what sexuality had to do with the promotion. What did the “queerness” of this function have to carry out with selling me on the story and artistic vision of the comic book?
I’m not a part of the community, and there’s a lot I still don’t realize, but I notice now that there’s inherent value in marginalized perspectives in story, and there’s worth in supporting the voices that aim to reveal them. So many of my favorite comic books are either directly or indirectly about gender non-conforming people, relationships, and community, and expansive amounts of my favorite comic guide creators identify as gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual or other identifiers in the LGBTQIA+ range. The simple reality is that the more queer stories and creators at the forefront of comics, the better variety of new, electrifying works we obtain to enjoy.

Our favorite courteous of gay comic books are superhero ones. After all, superheroes are metaphors for LGBTQ people. Ordinary folk have to conceal their secret identity from the general public. And when they do take on their real persona, they are an unstoppable force capable of saving the world! Plus, who doesn’t cherish reading about hot men in skin-tight suits?
Though we do passion gay comics starring regular same-sex attracted folk and their stories, of which there are plenty.
Comic books are the best friend of any traveler. They give readers a more visual experience than books. They are lightweight and don’t require Wi-Fi. These books contain a variety of subjects, themes, moods, and styles, all queer books by queer authors. I’ve mixed it up in order to give an idea of how diverse queer comics can be, through my particular lens—my tastes skew toward mature personal narratives and indie artwork. It is in no way a fulfill list, just a taste.
