MY GAY CLASSICS TOP 100

Back to my homepage

These are - in random order - my personal 100 favorite gay classics. Some records are sung by gay artists, some have lyrics that are gay orientated and some are just popular in the gay community (or at least with me).

1. ABBA - Dancing Queen (1976)
(Benny Andersson, Stig Anderson, Björn Ulvaeus)
The Swedish popgroup ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with 'Waterloo'. From then on they conquered the world with songs like 'Money, money, money', 'The winner takes it all' and 'Chiquitita'. Dancing Queen - which came from the album 'Arrival' became Abba's only number one in the USA and worldwide became their biggest clap single. The song is also featured in the musical 'Mamma Mia'. In the Netherlands 'Dancing Queen' was released twice: in 1976 and 1993. Abba recorded the song also in Spanish: La Reina del Baile. The video for the song was directed by Lasse Halström.
Nowadays Björn Again is a wonderful Abba-cover-group. Nice covers of 'Dancing Queen' are by the San Francisco Gay Mens Choir, Luka Bloom and the Sydney same-sex attracted & lesbian Choir. Australian singer Kylie Minogue performed the tune at the 2000 Syd

Thirty days of summer is a pretty paltry window of time to honor the LGBTQ+ community, and Pride is so much more than a month of parades and celebrations – it’s life. And while we’d never baulk at an excuse to celebrate everything that Celebration stands for, we also believe that any hour is the perfect day to crank up these gay songs and travel that rainbow flag.

That’s why we’ve assembled a 50-song playlist perfectly calibrated for Pride Month and beyond, featuring some of history’s greatest queer artists and LGBTQ+ allies who remunerate more than lip service. You’ll find party anthems, pop songs, disco infernos and punk-rock proclamations, so there’s no need to wait for the procession. This is your all-seasons, all-time-great Pride playlist. Clutch the aux cable and blast it loud and proud.
