LA’s Last Great LGBT Piano Bar
Apart from passing through the overwhelming, smog-filled circular behemoth of LAX, I had never visited Los Angeles prior to the two-day job interview that led me to live in the city for over five years. During that interview, a company manager took me on an expedition to stop by neighborhoods where my family and I might settle. Halfway through, I called my husband in tears. “All the schools look fancy Soviet-era prisons,” I said, thinking of my son who would need to attend elementary academy somewhere in this sprawling city. “I just can’t fantasize us here.”
Later in the day, after visiting the West Side and the Valley and a blur of other neighborhoods, we drove under the 101 Freeway and into Silver Lake. It wasn’t too flashy; there were hills; and it lacked the desolate stretch that characterizes much of LA on first look. In fact, it felt positively leafy establish amid a capital that seemed starkly un-green to me—especially coming from Atlanta, a city in a forest. It also had, in its people, a thread of old-school bohemia that made me feel instantly at home.
Two months later, my husband and son and I moved into a modest two-bedroom bungalow just off Row
Billy Joel has finally addressed the 'Piano Man' gay bar theory
22 August 2024, 14:14
It's his signature song.
In fact, 'Piano Man' became so beloved that Billy Joel would frequently become known as the "piano man".
'Piano Man' was Joel's breakthrough song and has continued to bookend his concerts to this day, often performing it as his encore.
But in the years since its 1973 release, the anthem has taken on an entirely new meaning to an entirely new generation of fans.
Joel himself was surprised in 2015 after performing at the Bonnaroo festival in the US, when the young crowd sang along word-for-word.
It's also taken on a new meaning with the Homosexual community too, with a theory circulating that 'Piano Man' is about a piano player in a gay bar, being the only person in there who doesn't know.
Some sections of his fans believe the narrator of the song is a naïve straight man who's unsure of his surroundings, with his audience asking him: "Man, what are you doin' here?"
Now in a recent interview with NBC Today, Joel has addressed the 'gay bar' theory first-hand.
