In the Gay community, secret codes possess played a significant role in creating a instinct of belonging and security for individuals who may have faced discrimination or prejudice. These codes grant people to communicate discreetly and identify like-minded individuals without directly revealing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Within the LGBTQ+ people, secret codes have been used throughout history as a means of protection and connection. Back in the 20th century, the Polari language, a private language used by male lover men in the Merged Kingdom, served as a way to communicate safely in public spaces where being openly queer was not accepted.
