Christopher John:

LaCage has been a accurate landmark for gays in and out of Milwaukee. LaCage offers several gyrate floors, a gorgeous updated upstairs and another bar downstairs which offers another feel to this large nightclub!

I've been here more than a handful of times, and I can state ever since they changed the designate back to La Cage, this place has never been better! I'd appreciate to give some praise to Sami and Donovan for being some of the absolute optimal bar tenders I've ever come across!

Milwaukee's This Is It!, one of country's oldest Homosexual bars, permanently closes Sunday

This Is It!, one of the country's oldest Queer bars and a Milwaukee institution, closed its doors permanently Sunday.

The Covid-19 pandemic and an eight-month closure of East Wells Road last year "put the business in a position that we could not ultimately overcome," the exclude said in a Facebook post.

"This is It! has been so much more than a nightlife notice for the queer society. It has been a gathering place, a harmless place, a second dwelling, and the memories made at the bar will stay in our hearts forever. We want you to know that we did everything we could to keep our doors open for you," the post read.

This Is It! opened in 1968, making it the state's oldest continually operating gay lock. It's also one of the oldest LGBTQ+ bars in the United States. June Brehm, who died in 2010, and her son Joseph Brehm were the original founders. Both have been recognized by Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, herself the first openly gay senator elected to Congress.

'This Is It' is Milwaukee’s oldest lgbtq+ bar

MILWAUKEE — Opened in 1968, “This Is It” has the honor of being the longest continually operating homosexual bar in the Midwest. Founder June Brehm wanted a clean, welcoming, and affordable place where she and her queer friends could feel at home.

55 years later, the vision is continued by owners George Schneider and Trixie Mattel. At one time, Milwaukee had many gay bars, far fewer now, but “This Is It” has managed to thrive.

I met with George to learn about the rich history of the lock.

“Historically, we were known as a gay bar, but I like to call it a queer space. What makes us particular is that we’ve hung on to some of the old elements of style and layout, like carpet on the walls and original stained glass light fixtures. It looks like you’re walking into grandpa's rec room," said George. “To hold that connection with the past, we’re a symbol of all the struggles of the past 50 to 100 years, for the rights and freedoms that we hold now. It’s a symbol for the queer community and the community at large. Because out of all of the larger Midwestern cities, we’re the one that has the oldest gender non-conforming establishment.”
